XP under ice

I was using a knockback sword on mobs today when the exp from them fell through the ice. They died while "flying" backwards and the exp spawned under the ice. It wasn't retrievable unless I broke the ice. I am unsure if this is a minecraft bug or bug with the server.

This is far away, the orb is beneath the cursor.
Maybe it has something to do with the discoloration where the orbs are? Sorry the pictures are in link form.
